It was both an honor and privilege to know and work with David. He was a very caring person. It was always a relief to know that he was responding to or already on the scene of an ambulance call. Dave was so good to me as I was getting CNL going. Not just friendly and trusting, but also totally professional. It didn't take long for me to decide he was one of my favorite and most loyal public servants in the region.
From time to time, rivalries and jealousies between fire departments resulted in me being condemned for implying Dave was the dean of fire chiefs in the region. Well, I'll say it here and anyone who is offended can take a flying leap. Dave was the model fire chief. He set the bar. He is the fire chief by which other fire chiefs will be measured for decades to come. And not just for leadership on scene. But also for the best fiscal management of any fire department in the region (getting gtratvassets for the department, but also being anti debt)
I loved this man. I grieve with you. He's gone far too soon. There is no logic to it. Life can be unfair and random. But while he was here, man did he live life to the fullest! He strengthened his community. He mentored many young men. And he led countless efforts that saved lives and millions upon millions of dollars in property.
I wish I could be in Hermann this week; I cannot. But all three of you will be iny thoughts many times this week, and in the future.
