Fred Mertz Obituary

Fred B. Mertz, 100, of Berger, MO, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021 at his home.

Fred was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 28, 1920, the son of the late Fredrick H. & Clara P. (Schinzing) Mertz.

Fred was united in marriage to Nolene E. Eberwein on October 16, 1948, in Chesterfield, Missouri. Nolene preceded him in death on July 24, 2020.

Fred proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during WWII.  He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Hermann, Missouri.

Fred worked for Lindberg Cadillac for many years as salesman. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, farming, fishing, traveling and tinkering with his farm equipment.

Fred is survived by a son, Steven Mertz, of Ludington, Michigan; a daughter, Barbara Mertz-Unger & husband Ray, of Troy, Missouri; a son, Brian Mertz & wife Yadira, of Hermann, Missouri; three grandchildren, David Mertz, Lauren Westermann, and Sarah DeLong, by five great grandchildren, Will, Graham, Nolan, James and Marie, and many nieces & nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nolene Mertz, two brothers, Walter and Ted Mertz and sisters, Helen Heintz, Lillian Lewis and Clara Ann Teague.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30th from from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Hermann, where funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Steve Kamprath officiating. 

Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, with full military honors.  Memorials may be given to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church or New Haven American Legion.  C/O Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home.
