Douglas C. Schmitt, 79, of Morrison, MO, passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023 at SSM St. Mary's Hospital, Jefferson City, Missouri.
Doug was born in Pershing, Missouri on October 4, 1943, the son of the late Jacob J. & Mabel (Stortz) Schmitt.
He was the husband of Gloria (Sheets) Schmitt. They were united in marriage on June 18, 2016, at Zion St. Peter UCC.
Farming was Doug’s Passion. Doug grew up on the family farm and helped his parents with chores. His father taught him the art of woodworking. Upon graduating from Hermann High School, Doug proudly served his country in the United States Army where he assisted with the Nike Missile Program. After his service, Doug took over the family dairy. He milked Holstein cows and sold milk to Pevely, Mid America, and finally Central Dairy until selling the cows and turning to crop and beef farming.
Doug was a member of Zion St. Peters UCC in Pershing, Missouri all his life. He served the church in many capacities and sat on the church board many times. He loved music and especially loved his time in the Hermann Community Choir. Doug had a great sense of humor, was always quick to smile or tell a joke. He demonstrated to his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, a solid faith, and a love for our country.
Doug is survived by his wife, Gloria Schmitt, of Morrison, Missouri; a daughter, Lori Bockting & husband Kent, of Morrison, Missouri; and by three grandchildren, Megan, Jacob & Hannah Bockting; and by Gloria’s children, Christina Elias & husband Michael, of St. John, Florida, Matthew Robb & wife Melody of Las Vegas, Nevada; and a sister, Vera Rust, of Columbia, Missouri.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Myra Dean (Hackmann) Schmitt, two sons, Kent & Gregory Schmitt, a sister, Janet McCarthy, and a granddaughter, Grace Bockting.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion-St. Peter United Church of Christ, Pershing, with Rev. Barb Zastrow officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hands of Hope Medical Mission in Guatemala or the Gasconade County Historical Society.
