Walter G. Gaertner, 91, of Hermann, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Boone Hospital, Columbia, Missouri.
Walter was born in St. Louis, Missouri on March 24, 1925, a son of the late Louis E. & Elizabeth S. (Brandt) Gaertner.
He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Schannuth) Gaertner. They were married on May 17, 1947, at St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann. Dorothy survives in Columbia, Missouri.
Walter is survived by five daughters, W. Lee Paige, of Columbia, Missouri; Shirley Ovcina & husband Safet, of St. Louis, Missouri; Norma Shoupe, of Columbia, Missouri; Bonnie Harvey & husband Jack, of Marshall, Missouri; and Kathy Price & husband Russell, of Bridgeton, Missouri, by eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, Walter Shoupe, his twin sister Mildred Buschmeyer and two brothers Howard & Raymond Gaertner.
Walter proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a paratrooper with tours of duty in the Philippines and Japan. He was a life member of the Hermann V.F.W. Post 4182, a life member of the Hermann Rod & Gun Club, and a member of the Missouri Valley Region Model A Ford Club and Mid-Missouri Region Model A Ford Club. He was a retired tool & die maker/machinist and since 1960 was an avid collector and restorer of antique cars.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 31st from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11: 00 a.m.
Burial will be at Oak Haven Memorial Gardens, Hermann, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to V.F.W. or American Heart Association. C/O Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home.
