Vernon J. "Pee Wee" Birk, 80, of Hermann, MO, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Mercy Hospital, Washington, Missouri.
Vernon was born in Hermann, Missouri on August 28, 1936, a son of the late Victor & Josepha (Speckhals) Birk.
Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army Air Corp from 1954 to 1957.
He was the husband of Flora Mae (Heying) Birk. They were united in marriage on September 27, 1958, at Rhineland, Missouri. Mae survives at the home.
Vernon is also survived by two sisters, Bertha Van Booven, of Rhineland, Missouri; and Sister Dorothy Birk, of Wheaton, Illinois; a brother, Marvin Birk & wife Kathy, of Gerald, Missouri; two brothers-in-law Charlie Baumstark, of Hermann; and Monty Heying & friend Yvonne, of Foristell, Missouri; and a sister-in-law Sharon Butenhoff, of Melville, Missouri; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces & nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Virgil Anthony Birk, his twin brother Virgill Benjamin Birk, a sister Margaret Shaner, and a great nephew Austin Van Booven.
Vernon was a member of St. George Church, Hermann, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Hermann and of the Hermann Fire Department. He worked for the Hermann Sand & Gravel Plant.
In his free time he enjoyed being in the outdoors, deer hunting and loved being on the river fishing and also enjoyed making homemade wine.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home, Hermann.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Church, with Rev. Msgr. Gregory Higley officiating.
Burial will be at St. George Cemetery, with full military honors. Memorials may be given to families choice. C/O Toedtmann & Grosse Funeral Home.
