Doris Margaret (Boone) Binkholder, age 87, passed away on Monday, December 9, 2019 at Hermann Area District Hospital, Hermann, Missouri

Doris was born on April 29, 1932 in Lenox, Iowa to Glen & Lila Sarah (Rhoades) Boone.  She was married to Stanley W. Binkholder on November 8, 1949, in Golden, Colorado, who died on September 9, 1997.

Doris is survived by two sisters, Louise Boone, of Anchorage, Alaska; and Glenna (Boone) Kitchell, of Escondido, California; by three sons, Michael Binkholder of Hermann; Rick Binkholder and wife Mary (LaBoube), of New Florence; and Timothy Binkholder, of Hermann; a daughter, Cindy (Binkholder) Duncan and husband Alan, of Hermann; by her grandchildren, Joel Binkholder and wife Amanda (Elliott), of Hermann;  Dustin Binkholder and wife Crystal (Koelling), of Hermann; Traci (Binkholder) Heldt and husband Loren, of Hermann; Ryan Binkholder and wife Brandi (Schubert), of Webster Groves; Daniel Binkholder and wife Katie (Williams), of St. Peters; Kyle Duncan and wife Brittany (Chambers), of Hermann; and Brandi (Duncan) Glenn, of Mexico; by  10 great grandchildren, and a dear friend, Joyce Churchill.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, daughter-in-law, Carol (Witthaus) Binkholder, her sister, Norma (Boone) Pitt, her parents, three brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law.

Doris enjoyed reading, spending time with her family and researching her family history. She and her husband Stanley owned and operated the Old Bait House for many years.  She owned/operated a day care/pre-school center for over 30 years. She was a Hermann alderman (first woman alderman) for 6 years, including 2 years as President; and was Hermann’s first woman mayor, serving 6 years.  During her time as mayor, she was instrumental in securing funding for the new Hermann Bridge, renovations at the Amtrak station, and other projects. Also, she was a past president of the Hermann VFW chapter, she served on the Maifest Council, and was Park Board secretary.

Doris researched her genealogy back to the American Revolution.  She was a previous member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) and the DUVCW (Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War).  Her ancestors fought in the American Revolution and her ancestor Jabez Harrison was killed at the Battle of Athens in 1861 at the onset of the Civil War. Doris’ relatives included Benjamin Harrison, who signed the Declaration of Independence; and Presidents William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison and Abraham Lincoln.
